As a mother, I have always had inhibitions on cooking instant foods and a definitive no to the aerated drinks, though sometimes I do succumb to the kids pressure, as otherwise I was seen as a villain to simple pleasures of living. Man what a joy - am quite relieved now and it gives me so much happiness that I have all the authority now to refuse these food items into my kitchen without being questioned anymore. Thanks, the Maggi row was indeed a blessing in disguise to me.
It does raise a few questions to ponder
~ how global brands have been quick and smart influencers on our food habits
~ by aping westernisation we have become a victim to all the junk that the world has to throw on us
~ how in the process we have dug the grave for all the desi brands
Long ago, just when the pepsis and the cokes were infiltrating, we had numerous brands big and small in my state who were not only great brands but was not causing any health hazard too. It is heartening to see them come back to market and as a true Indian, my choice is always them- be it the #kalimark #bovonto or #panneersoda,
I just relished Bovonto yesterday and I can certainly vouch that the global cola brands can in no way match its taste.
I still remember the day when my friends wanted to try the all new maggi and we experimented it at my kitchen. While I don't recall much on the taste and whether we really liked it, what I vaguely remember is I either dint get an opportunity to relish it again or was not keen on it, and I certainly thank my stars for it.
Its not just the maggi, there have been numerous videos on how kurkure burns when lit and that it has plastic and also numerous claims on how Lays is not good for health. But has it stopped any of these brands in marketing themselves or has their share dipped? that also raises the question on what role the food safety department was playing so far, is it not their duty to constantly keep a check on the products.
Who consumes all these packaged food items, it is the educated and the informed and of course the wannabe urban? so are we not aware that it may have harmful ingredients , probably the alarming raise in the lifestyle diseases is not without a reason and am sure we the educated know that much of it stems from our food habits and our lifestyle.
At least here in the city that I live, there is a strong sense that is coming up now and active group of people who advocate ethnic food items and we have numerous food fests that expose us to the desi foods - the millets, ragis and the like. It is just the starting point, the consistent effort in promoting our desi food will reap the benefit for the generation to come and that is the hope of all people like me who is caught in the mid order generation.
And do celebs as influencers have a role to play? yes that is going to be the next topic. stay tuned , and till then happy eating and a healthy living :)
